In 2018, Janet was awarded the CIArb Canada Award for Distinguished Service in Arbitration in Canada.

Public and academic

Janet served as a member of the Canadian Forces Primary Reserve for 37 years and of the Supplementary Ready Reserve for five years. She received a number of honours including: the Canadian Forces Decoration (2nd clasp); the LFCA Commander’s Award of Excellence; and the GGHG CO and RSM’s Award of Excellence. In recognition of her service to Canada she received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Janet was the Osgoode Hall Law School Silver Medallist in 1993 and she received a Teaching Award in 2010 for her teaching in the Osgoode Professional Masters Program.

In 2020, Janet received the title of Distinguished Research Professor from York University for her commitment to excellence, and international leadership in the fields of private international law, procedural law, comparative law and international commercial arbitration.

On December 29 2021, Janet was appointed to the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada for her expert legal authority in commercial arbitration and conflict of laws, and for advancing legal procedural standards in Canada.
